Razor Scooters

The Razor A scooter … What does that phrase make you think about? If you have children, I’m certain that you’ve already heard of the Razor A scooter series, but they weren’t around when we were children. However, the concept was, although I forget the marques from my childhood.

I adored my two-wheeled, kick-powered scooter when I was a kid. Mum and Dad had their automobile, my older brothers had their bikes and I had my scooter. It didn’t go fast, but then, I didn’t go far either, but it was transport and it gave that feeling of freedom. I had my wheels and I was on the move!

Well, the modern variety of that scooter is the Razor A scooter series. And they really are modern too! They are a long chalk from the simple scooters of yesteryear. The Razor A scooter series was brought out in the year 2000 and is sturdy, strong, collapsible and safe.

The Razor A scooter series is sold in several guises to accommodate different age groups, abilities and pockets. For example, the Razor A scooter is meant for children of six years and older, while the Razor A2 scooter, the Razor A3 scooter and the Razor Pro scooter are meant for older, heavier, more demanding and more skilful riders. With prices starting at about $25 none of them is over-priced.

The Razor A scooter series is made from aircraft-grade light aluminium and weighs in at just six pounds. That’s light enough for any small child to be able to carry, if necessary, without risk of injury. It is also collapsible, which means that it is easy to carry under your arm, in the boot of your car or on the bus. Storage is a doddle too.

The Razor A scooter series is height-adjustable too in that the handlebars can be raised as your child grows up or if an older sibling wants a turn. It also has a heavy-duty braking system, which is obviously very important as these scooters will easily reach speeds of five or six mph on the flat and much more on a slope. Going down, that is.

The Razor A scooter series also has lesser and greater stable mates. The Razor Kiddie Kick is meant for children younger than six and has a third wheel for increased stability, although it is just as strong and durable as the Razor A scooter series. The Razor A scooter series is intended for ‘young-minded’ people from the age of six. I use the words ‘young-minded’ because it is quite the rage now, to put one in the car and scooter the last mile or two into work or college. That mile or two every day will save you gas and give you extra exercise over a prolonged period of time. After all, it all adds up, doesn’t it?

Then, for those who require a bit more, there are the Razor E100(S), Razor E200(S) and the Razor E300(S), which are electrically powered scooters. The (S) denotes that they have a seat fitted.

So, why not introduce your child to the concept of mobility with a Razor A scooter? Give your child the chance to look back on his or her youth in 20-30 years time and remember rushing about at three-five mph on a Razor A scooter.

A new Porsche 911 is always intriguing because it’s exciting to see how after more than 40 years of development the Porsche team still manages to bring alterations and advancements to this iconic exemplar.

The new 997 combines the sleek contemporary looks of the 996 series with the fashionable retro styling of the older 911’s. The front end is completed with round lights and separate parking/fog/indicator lights. This change, coupled with wider hips echoes the last of the air-cooled 911’s, the 993. Other alterations in the body shell are the new door handles, wing mirrors and the trendy cut of the rear wings into the bumper/lights.

Even if the 997 looks a lot like the preceding model, the 996, the new car is in point of fact 38mm wider which makes for a more aggressive look. With each new model brought out, Porsche has tried to lessen the drag co-efficient helping the 911 slide through the air more efficiently thereby aiding performance. The same thing has been achieved with the new car, and if we compare the 993 Cd of 0.34 to the 997`s 0.28, we can see how far the aerodynamic game has moved on. They also kept the previous two front and two side airbags, which means that now there are six air bags in total. For the same reason, that is crash safety, the reinforced body shell boasts additional protection such as a more widespread use of very high strength steel.

The most recent model is also 50 kg heavier than the 996. The reason is that modern crash safety regulations sort of force vehicle manufacturers to produce new cars of increased weight, despite the widespread use of a large range of weight saving measures, such as an aluminum bonnet.

Aside from the crash safety improvements, much of the additional weight can be attributed to the higher standard specifications of the new cars. The power to weight ratio is analogous with the latest car offering 233 bhp per tonne against it’s predecessors 238 but the new model’s improved aerodynamics must help it achieve Porsche’s claimed performance figures, which are identical to those of the 996.

Learning from Golf Lessons

It is never easy asking for help, but in golf, it is almost a must-do. More’s the pity, we often ask our friends and partners, whereas in fact, we should be taking a lesson or two with a professional, usually called the Club Pro.

We may possibly think that a Pro would be too critical, but in fact,they are honest, positive and usually very helpful.

Lessons at the local golf course aren’t as expensive as you might think and they are worth it because your game will improve more rapidly and cause you less frustration, making the game much more enjoyable for you.

It is of utmost importance to be absolutely honest about your game. The Pro will ask you what you think you need to start with: driving, chipping, putting or whatever you feel you need assistance with.

Listen carefully and follow the Pro’s instructions. You may have doubts if the Pro changes your stance, your grip or your swing, but really, the Pro does know best.

Don’t hesitate to ask the Pro golfer any questions. Don’t worry about whether your question or concern may sound stupid – they’ve heard it all before and will not make you feel like a fool for asking. If you don’t get it, tell him/her that you do not get it. You should never walk away from a lesson with unanswered questions.

For instance, a strategy might be to start with one thing during a lesson, or on several things. You might begin with a lesson on driving; get the grip, the stance, the swing and the follow-through right in one lesson and then practice it ‘for real’ for a few weeks until you feel that you’ve got it more or less right. Next time, you might decide to work on your short game, or the putting.

You’ve invested in your golfing equipment and it isn’t cheap, so it doesn’t make sense not to learn how to use it to it’s best advantage and improve your abilities, does it?

Golfing Etiquette Essentials

Golf is a carefully balanced game of rules and etiquette, and it’s very important to know the essentials of golfing etiquette before you go on the course to play your first game of golf.

Whether you are playing on your own, in a twosome or a foursome, the first rule of golfing etiquette is that you must always wait your turn. You must stay aware of the group on the next hole and wait until they are well ahead of you before hitting your ball.

Golfing etiquette also means that it is never cool to “hurry” the group in front of you. If you are playing with others, wait your turn to hit the ball and never play at the same time as another player.

While you are waiting for your turn, go to your ball and determine what club you will need to use and how you are going to hit it. This is called “ready golf” and keeps the game moving along. Don’t rush anybody, just be ready.

Another nice piece of golfing etiquette, especially for the novice is ‘playing through’. For example, if your team is holding up the players behind you, say because you are playing consistently over par, let them play through. You would simply wave them through, or if they are near enough to you, just ask them if they would like to play through. You will never make enemies by doing this!

When someone is making a shot, you should be standing behind them and you shouldn’t make any noise! It is so distracting to be ready to tee off and just as you draw back, someone decides to play with coins in their pocket or noisily unwrap a piece of candy.

Replacing divots. Let’s say you are on the fairway and you hit the ball a bit thick and a clod of earth and grass goes flying, no problem, but golfing etiquette says that you ought to repair the hole. On some courses you just put the clod back into the hole and step on it to keep it down, but on most courses, there is a sand/seed mixture on the course to put into the divot. Also, if your ball makes a deep impression when it lands on the green, you should use your divot tool to repair it.

Fishing for Bass

Fishing equipment is called fishing tackle by specialists and hobbyists and it generally refers to rods, lines, hooks, sinkers, spears, lures, bait, reels, nets, and et cetera. The fishing gear that is attached at the end of a line is called terminal tackle

The word tackle referring to fishing equipment comes from ‘takel’ which initially meant the rigging of a ship, that is, the gear consisting of ropes supporting a ship’s masts and sails. Later, the same word was recorded to have a another meaning, that of apparatus for fishing and that meaning has been preserved ever since.

The most rudimentary fishing apparatus is made up of of a rod, a line, a hook, a lure, a bait and a weight or sinker. The line is a basic string specially made for fishing that is both long, strong and yet thin, so that fish do not notice it. There are several things that an angler asks about when buying a fishing line, such as its resistance, stretch, strength et cetera. The line will be chosen depending on what kind of fish the angler intends to catch.

The sinker or weight, also called a plummet, is really only a weight that helps in casting the hook and the bait as far as possible from the shoreline or from the boat that the fisherman is using. They are usually made of lead as their purpose is also to sink and to get the bait closer to the fish in the water as fast as possible. However, lead sinkers have been banned in some parts of the world, especially the really small ones, which are often called ’shot’. If ingested by birds or other fish, the lead, which is known for its high toxicity level, will cause the death of the animal.

Another basic piece of fishing equipment is the hook. This device meant for holding the bait on the line and for hooking into the fish’s mouth. It is attached to the line and the fisherman can select from a pretty wide range of shapes, sizes and materials.

Last but not least, the fishing equipment is not efficient without bait or lure. A lure is a device tied at the end of the line that looks and moves something resembling the prey of the fish you are after. Its purpose is to catch the attention of the fish with its colour and movement. Artificial flies and sand eels fall into this category. When the fish bites the lure, it gets hooked.

Bait, on the other hand, is the item actually attached to the hook. Bait is often of two types: animal or foodstuff. ‘Animal’ refers to small fish or other water creatures, insects or crawlers. ‘Foodstuff’ refers to grains, like corn, bread or whatever the angler believes might work.

Aikido, The Latest Martial Art

The sphere of Martial Arts is one of the most important gifts of Asia to the world. Who will not remember Bruce Lee and the fact that he was first and foremost a martial arts competitor before being a film star? Martial arts films are a huge hit with the escalating popularity of Asian movies like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and more recently ‘The House of the Flying Daggers’.

The Chinese are the first people that come to mind when it you think of these things, but the Japanese are just as athletic with a rich heritage of body contact sports in their past. Modern Japan still honours the martial arts by holding tournaments and promoting their sports around the world,

Aikido is one of these. It is interesting to note the fact that the word comes from three Japanese characters from which one derives the meaning of the one word. Ai means ‘joining’, Ki means ’spirit’ and Do means ‘way’. From this we can understand why Aikido lies beyond merely the physical skills of it students, particularly since its first proponent, Ueshiba, focused on the spiritual and philosophical development of his students.

In Aikido, one is not taught aggression instead, one is trained to be in harmony with the adversary so that you are able to defeat him more easily. This might seem strange but it really works. In approaching an opponent, the aim of the Aikido practitioner is to be one with the opponent so as to be able to attack him where he is weakest and in so doing, divert or put him out of action, but never to kill him.

This is where Aikido becomes an art form. Art is something delightful to look at and something constructive and Aikido is all that. At least one of the contestants involved in the combat is searching for concord and concord can only be achieved if there is grace in the actions. The moves may be premeditated, but there is an air of finesse in carrying out these movements. Not a feminine grace, but a grace that emanates peace. The ‘art of peace’ is what they call it in Aikido and it is one of the most affirmative influences of Aikido on its students and to everyone else who decides to find out about this Japanese martial art.

Some of the techniques in Aikido include the following techniques.

Ikkyo is the first technique. Using this technique, you direct an adversary by using one hand to hold his elbow and one to hold near the wrist. This action is supposed to allow you to pin your opponent down to the ground.

Nikyo, the second technique, is when you perform a wrist lock which enables you to twist the arm of your opponent which will in turn cause nerve pressure.

Sankyo, the third technique, is a technique that creates upward-spiraling tension throughout the arm, elbow and shoulder. There are many other techniques but the first three are enough to give you a basic idea.

In studying Aikido, it is vital to remember that, together with building physical strength, you will need to improve your mind to be able to overpower your opponent. Just like in any art form, it takes a lot of training and discipline to reach the summit of the art of Aikido. The important thing to remember is, that anyone who wants to get into the art, must have the resolve to give honor to the art by performing it in the best way possible.
